Why do you think that young people delay their marriage in Korea

This essay is about the late marriage trend in Korea. Peronally it is quite interesting topic for me because I have seen a lot of couple who postpone their marriage while keeping the relationship for a long time. Below writing is about my peronal opinion.

Topic)

The number of people tying the knot has gradually decreased since 2011, hitting its lowest level in 2017 with less than 270,000 marriages. Why do you think that young people delay their marriage in Korea?

It was common for young people to get married when they reached a certain age around the late 20's or early 30's.

Marriage was once considered as a duty not an option, so the people who are single at their late age are seen as failures in the Korean society. However, as many conflicts come together with marriage process and relationship, more and more people put off their marriage and some of them even give up marriage.

I think the main reason driving such a phenomenon is the financial burden that they should face after marriage, especially for the people in the middle class. When people live alone, they are not forced to buy a house and save money for the future. That is totally up to one's choice and lifestyle when living alone, but if someone makes a family, they are pushed for being affordable in order to raise children and enjoy good quality life. Such a pressure is getting stronger as house prices skyrocket and the gap between the rich and poor widens. Many young people in the middle class think they are not ready to make a family so they put off their marriage.

Fortunately, some of them get married at the late marital age  but others give up getting married when they enter their late 30s or 40s. The latter didn’t intend to live alone at first, but they end up living alone or being single for the rest of their lives. On the other hand, some people avoid getting married because they don’t want to be involved with complex situations which marriage entails as the sayings goes “Marriage is not only the combination of two people but also the integration of two families”. I think this sentence implies there are many conflicts when two families meet and move toward one family. We can easily find such couples who suffer from conflicts or failed to get married while they were planning or preparing for their weddings. Some of them are sick of marriage and do not hurry to get married (even THOUGH they HAVE already passed the marital age.

To fall in love with somebody and make a family is very happy and blessing event. Wedding is born to celebrate it.

However, severe financial burden and conflicts of interests lead people to postpone or even give up their marriage. It could be difficult to fully avoid such pains, but we should try to cooperate and understand each other to bring back marriage’s original value.
